SKIDAWAY ISLAND, GA / ACCESSWIRE / October 18, 2021 / Only 11 communities in the nation have attained the distinct honor of being designated a Certified Sustainable Community by Audubon International, a not-for-profit with a mission to create environmentally sustainable environments where people live, work and play. The Landings, a master-planned community located on a private island approximately 15 minutes from downtown Savannah, GA, has proven for the second time that it has what it takes to achieve certification.
The Landings understands the importance of protecting the environment. After becoming the first in Georgia to be distinguished as a Certified Sustainable Community in 2018, The Landings continuously improved its efforts to achieve recertification. To be eligible for the three-year recertification, achievements must be demonstrated in 15 program areas, including open space and land use, public health and safety, recreation, volunteerism, planning, and environmental education and resource conservation-all of which are essential to sustaining a viable and vibrant community.
'It was truly a team effort by our resident volunteers to make such significant strides to improve the quality of our community,' said Raoul Rushin, President of The Landings Company. 'This is just one of many reasons The Landings is a sought-after location to live and named an ideal-LIVING Magazine Top 100 Planned Community. '
Expanded recreational facilities, environmental educational opportunities, inclusion of solar power in architectural guidelines, retrofitting streetlights with LED bulbs, and efforts targeting food insecurity in the broader communities, were just some of the noteworthy achievements The Landings implemented to retain the title.
'Although the Audubon International certifications are more recent, sustainability has been a part of The Landings for nearly three decades,' added Rushin.
In 1998, action was taken to improve golf course conditions and maintenance in a way that would significantly improve the environment and a partnership with Audubon International began. By 2002, all six golf courses at The Landings had been certified as Audubon Cooperative Sanctuaries. In 2007, the Skidaway Audubon, a not-for-profit organization, was formed by residents to perform and support conservation projects throughout the island.
