DAMASCUS, April 7 (Xinhua) -- Syria's leader Ahmed al-Sharaa on Monday appointed Abdelkader Husrieh as the country's new central bank governor, according to a decree published by state media.
The appointment was followed by an official swearing-in ceremony at the Presidential Palace in Damascus, marking the beginning of Husrieh's tenure at the helm of the war-torn nation's monetary institution.
Husrieh, a Syrian economist with a background in public policy and reform, is best known for his work in financial consultation and international economic affairs.
Husrieh holds a PhD in finance from Britain's Durham University, an executive MBA and bachelor's degree in business administration from the American University of Beirut, and a law degree from Damascus University. In 2012, Husrieh was elected chair of the Finance Commission of the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies.
His appointment comes amid ongoing economic reforms under the new transitional government, which has pledged to stabilize the Syrian currency and restore confidence in state institutions following more than a decade of conflict and financial turmoil.
