Five-star recruit Dylan Mingo, the No. 8 overall prospect in the class of 2027 per 247Sports, committed to North Carolina in February, but he decided on Monday to decommit and reopen his recruitment.
Mingo, a 6-foot-5 combo guard out of Long Island Lutheran (N.Y.), did not sign a letter of intent with North Carolina, which officially hired Michael Malone on April 7 to replace the fired Hubert Davis. Mingo, who committed to Davis on Feb. 17, met with Malone and members of his staff over the weekend.
Baylor, Penn State and Washington were also finalists to land Mingo, who also had offers from Alabama, Illinois, Louisville, UConn and Texas, among others.
Mingo missed most of his senior season due to an ankle injury, preventing him from qualifying for the McDonald's All-American game. Last June, he was named MVP of the NBPA Top 100 camp, averaging 23.8 points, 6.8 assists and 6.5 rebounds per game.
Playing 12 regular-season games for the PSA Cardinals on the Nike EYBL circuit, Mingo posted averages of 19.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.3 steals.
'I feel like from Day 1, my role will be a player who impacts winning in every aspect,' Mingo told ESPN when he committed to UNC. 'Honestly, I am just a person who will give it his all to win a national championship.'
